Miguel Arruda's Nuvem is a decorative lighting solution that stands out from the crowd. The design is inspired by a sculpture from the 70s that explored the anthropomorphic design of the female form. Arruda has transformed this concept into a lighting solution, using a sheet of millimetre-thin technopolymer that undergoes cold cutting and is then hand-folded into three-dimensional elements. These elements are connected in hexagonal modules to create a lamp that can be adapted to any space.
The Nuvem's unique properties lie in its versatility and adaptability. The light source can be placed anywhere within the design: above for dramatic shadows and plays of light, below for illuminating surfaces, or threaded through the modules' hexagonal openings for horizontal lighting. This flexibility allows the Nuvem to be customized to suit any environment.
The production of the Nuvem utilizes an artisan technique that produces zero CO2, making it an environmentally friendly choice. The initial module is made of opalflex, a recyclable material composed of technopolymer and glass crystals. The packaging of the product is also minimal, with a thickness of just 8cm.
Arruda faced significant challenges in the design process, particularly in achieving the desired level of flexibility. The spatial development of the hexagonal module required an intense deformation of the projected surfaces, which was achieved through the use of opalflex. This choice of material was a significant aspect of the design from both a creative and technological perspective.
The Nuvem design has been recognized for its innovation and creativity, winning the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2020. This award is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
In conclusion, Miguel Arruda's Nuvem is a revolutionary design in the world of decorative lighting. Its unique properties, environmentally friendly production, and award-winning design make it a standout choice for those seeking a lighting solution that combines form and function in a truly innovative way.
